2015 KIC Off Season Poll Series Week IV: Thanksgiving Traditions

As the Off Season is still rolling through, over the past week my mind has been off the coasters, and on the turkey. Yes, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of the year. A time to reflect, a time to bake (and show off my amazing cooking skills*), and a time to share in a tradition with friends and families. From various Thanksgiving events, to special recipies only for the special day, many of us have Thanksgiving traditions. So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, what is your favorite Thanksgiving tradition?

*No, that does not mean that I can hand out my sweet potato casserole recipe, that's a BB1 family secret.

I drive to a state park way out in the countryside, which has a forested hiking trail that is nestled between two high hills, completely blocking all but the most natural sounds which, at this time of year is the sound of wind blowing through the late-autumn leaves that hang on through November. The scent of fallen leaves, and natural earth on the cool, frosty November air puts me in that mood of wonder and awe of the season that brings family and friends together. Then I head over to Dad's, eat like there's no tomorrow, pass out on the recliner, and wake up in time to catch the football scores.

The past few years we've done a vegetarian Thanksgiving and sponsored a turkey at a rescue farm. I got really sick last week and ended up having to spend a ton of money at the doctor's and on prescriptions. So I'm planning to do the vegetarian Thanksgiving again since we already have the supplies for a made from scratch seitan "turkey" roast and we won't have to spend money or freezer space on a frozen turkey. Even though I'm not vegetarian anymore it's still one of my absolute favorite foods, and my husband's too. So it looks like we'll be unintentionally continuing the tradition. Also it's a heck of a lot easier to cook than turkey and tastes about the same. And it's easier to have all the food finished at once. I'm excited about it.

Other than that, we typically spend Thanksgiving & Black Friday decorating for Christmas. I don't know if we'll get the outdoor stuff done this weekend, probably just the indoor, our weather is supposed to be oddly cold and rainy this weekend here.

Watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and then after dinner watching either Miracle on 34th Street or Home Alone.

Home Alone is one of my all time favorite Christmas movies of all time, that and A Christmas Story, also I enjoy the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Last year, I believe KISS made an appearance.

For the last 12 years (except for one), I've gone to one of my aunt's for dinner. Sometimes it's an open house where everyone gathers and visits throughout the day and I get to see most of my cousins, their kids, aunts and uncles. Sometimes, like this year, it's a smaller gathering. Either way, lots of stories, laughter, and family time. It's fun to sit and listen. I'm frequently tasked with bringing dessert. This year, I'm debating between making a chocolate peanut butter cake or caramel apple Bundt cake. Such a hard choice!

I will be spending Thanksgiving with my husband, who I am most thankful for. I guess it will be our 18th one together.

It was over Thanksgiving weekend of 1998 that I went to visit him in California, to check things out and see if I wanted to take him up on his offer to come live with him. We hadn't actually dated prior to that, but had become very good friends before he moved there from Ohio. That weekend I truly fell in love with him, and once I moved to be with him at the beginning of '99, we've rarely been apart.

Definitely the chocolate peanut butter cake. *drools*

A friend posted the cake she made for her husband's birthday and it looks amazing - http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2008/08/chocolate-peanut-butter-cake/

Like a massive buckeye. Yum!

But the caramel apple cake looks perfect for fall - http://www.honeybearlane.com/2013/09/caramel-apple-cake-recipe.html

See the dilemma? They both look very good.

I made this apple cider spice cake two years ago. It is a nice light cake with a slight richness thanks to the icing. http://birdonacake.blogspot.com/2012/09/apple-cider-spice-cake-with-apple.html?m=1

If you want to do something a bit silly for kids, I've done the peas & carrots and mashed potato cupcakes to great success - http://ourbestbites.com/2013/03/silly-cupcakes-for-april-fools/http://ourbestbites.com/2013/03/silly-cupcakes-for-april-fools/

Sorry...just sharing in case anyone else wants something other than pie for Thanksgiving. :)

Eh, still an easy choice. I don't like caramel. :P
