I rode this ride with a buddy who decided that he wanted to have the controls. I hated every minute of this ride! I didn't feel safe in it at all! The harness seemed very loose compared to the same type in the coasters. The person died by falling out of this ride the following season. I was not surprised when I found out.

I don't remember this ride. When was it active?

1991-1996 I believe.
A woman named Candy Taylor fell out of the cockpit of one during the 1991 season on "Black Sunday". KI's worst accident day ever.
She was intoxicated (alcohol level being .30) and supposably passed out when she was spinning the ride over to the upside down position. Well she ended up slipping into the EMPTY seat next to her and falling out of the ride 60 feet below..
I am sure those waiting in line and around that saw it were traumatized by the horrific accident. Someone that was there that I talked to said she actually "bounced" once when first first hit the concrete then hit it again. :(
The ride was close the rest of the season, then opened back the next year with the ride modified. There was a larger divider between the two seats, and the ride wouldn't let you stay upside down for very long. It had a timer on it. KI removed it in 1996. They said the lines to the ride were never that long after the accident..
About 45 minutes earlier 2 men, one being a security guard at KI got electrocuted in the beer pond because of a faulty pump.
Sad day indeed.

That looks like SO much fun. I never had a chance to ride it.
I wish they would design something similar and put it in the same spot.
I am so sorry that there was so much tragedy that day. I think a lot of people are frightened by this ride. It's a shame for KI and of course the woman and her family.
KI had a great record for safety. It was all so unfortunate.

My mom was working there on that day of the accidents. the guy who "fell" into the lake was actually drunk and decided to go for a swim. the security guard and the guy's friend are the once who died in the lake. then she said about an hour afterwards is when the lady purposely sliped out of the restraints. she knew what she was doing and then fliped the car upside down. the lady didnt pass out though. kings island tried to cover it up saying that 3 ppl died in a different way then what they really did.

I was just asking my husband if he remembered this ride! I rode it with a friend when I was about 10 yrs old. It was VERY unsafe. Definitely too much control for a 10 yr old to have. We almost slipped out!

I rode this ride several times during the early 90's and never felt unsafe. It had a strange sensation, however, given the fact that there was virtually no centrifugal force holding you in. I believe that had this incident not occured the ride would have lasted much longer and people wouldn't remember it feeling "unsafe".

This was here during the early 90's when I began visiting Kings Island as a child with my parents. Never got a chance to ride it, Nor do I even remember seeing it. Looks like it would've made me sick though..

The first time I rode this was my last. Don't get me wrong, it was a total blast and I pushed it to the ultimate limit. (You could control the rolling action yourself and I was upside down for most of the ride.) Upon my exit, I looked up at the next group of riders and said to myself, "That thing is far too extreme to be safe."

I went a week after the accident and it was closed. I was looking forward to riding it. I rode it the following year and I remember the cockpit being enclosed with some kind of metal screen. No way to fall out.

I rode this after the incident and Enjoyed it. Wish they still had it to this day. Yes, After the Death of Candy Taylor, they actually fully enclosed the capsules so there was no way you could fall out. But still, They make ride rules for a reason. Not just a suggestion. If she would have followed the rules, she would prolly still be alive. Sad to say, but true..

I rode Flight Commander many times before the death of Candy Taylor. It was the only ride besides the Beastie that could scare me. I was afraid of Flight Commander because I felt as if I might fall right out, and the Beastie because duct tape held parts of it together.
I enjoyed the ride and wish the safety features were in place before the accident happened so its name had not been tarnished. I think the ride would exist today if it had the proper restraints from its inception.

I've visited the park multiple times per year with my parents since I was able to ride the "Scooby Zoom", as it was called at the time. I on;y remember seeing this ride once, but was never tall enough to ride it before it was removed. Does anyone else find it weird that the new ride for 2011, "Windseeker", which highly resembles the setup of Flight Commander, minus the inverted aspect, is going in nearly the same area of the park? Strange coincidence?
